Summary

The most dramatic period of the American history is explored in this monograph. That is the period on the very eve of the Civil War (1861-1865). The political crisis made acute by the rebellion of John Brown caused some tension in the North-South relations and it was mirrored by the public opinion of both sections. The rebellion was seen differently in the North. Some took John Brown for a saint and some declared him mad. The South reacted negatively without any differences because this occasion was another chance to discuss the main problem of America - the existence of Negro slavery. Special attention is paid to the presidential election of 1860, when Lincoln and the Republicans came to power. This party fought for the territorial restriction of slavery. There were other problems tearing the country to pieces and they are also analyzed in the book. The author investigates the secessionist movement that resulted in the disruption of the Union, and also the reaction of both sections to this problem. T.V. Alentieva argues that public opinion played a major role in the coming of the Civil war.
Modern American historiography is also analyzed in the monograph.
The monograph is addressed to specialists, students and all persons interested in problems of history.
